RE:    State Band Contest (in March) and the Honor Band of NC Performance in April

Next month our top two concert bands will perform at State Contest at Apex Friendship H.S.  This is the most professionally significant performance of the year for our concert ensembles as the ratings that we earn are widely accepted as a valid marker of the overall strength and musicianship of the program, and are published in various ways throughout the State.

I have requested the following dates for our Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band to perform:

Wednesday, March 22Wind Ensemble

*We will most likely perform in the evening, anywhere between 5:00-9:00pm.

Thursday, March 23Symphonic Band

*We will most likely perform in the mid-later afternoon, anywhere between 2-6:00pm.

***PLEASE CHECK YOUR CALENDARS NOW TO RESERVE THESE DATES AND TIMES!  PLEASE LET ME KNOW IMMEDIATELY IF THERE IS A SERIOUS CONFLICT WITH THE ABOVE DATES/TIMES.

We should know our exact times by March 1st.  We will transport the students to and from Apex Friendship H.S. via activity bus.  The students will wear their formal concert attire.  More information will be sent under separate cover.  These performances are FREE and open to the public; parents and friends are encouraged to attend!

A reminder to our WIND ENSEMBLE:

As noted earlier this school year, our Wind Ensemble (along with the wind ensemble from Cuthbertson High School) was selected this past summer as an “Honor Band of North Carolina!”  This distinction was awarded based on recordings and our record of past honors/performances.  We were evaluated by a panel of music professionals outside the area; a fact that makes the selection even more impressive.

In addition to the distinction, our students will be rehearsing and performing Saturday, April 22nd at High Point University.  They will receive master classes by faculty members from HPU and a clinic with Mr. Richard Saucedo—one of the most famous band directors/composers in the world!  I have known Mr. Saucedo for many years and have played several of his works.  He even wrote our marching band show in 2006!  We will actually be performing his “Concerto for Band” at this concert!

I would like to transport the students to and from HPU via Charter Coach (if our budget allows).  Our boosters will provide a breakfast for our students to enjoy on the bus on the way to HPU.  The students will need to bring some money for dinner at the food court in the Four Seasons Mall on the way back to Raleigh.

Dress for much of the day will be “casual professional,” or “comfortable, but nice.”  The students will be interacting with many professionals and they need to “dress the part.”  Mainly, avoid jeans, flip-flops, tennis shoes, tee shirts, hoodies, and the like.  We will transport their formal concert attire on the charter bus or box truck.

This is all something to be very proud and excited about!  Our Athens Drive Band Program has so much depth that we continue to provide exceptional experiences to all of our students, whether they march before thousands in a stadium or down a city block, or perform before hundreds in a concert hall or gymnasium.   It’s simply “all good!”

Thank you for all of your continued support!  Ya gotta luv it!
