First Aid Advice

Marching Band is underway and we are so excited.  I am thankful to be partnering with you all as part of the First Aid Committee to make sure our High School students are SAFE and have fun.

With Band Camp RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER, it is important to prepare our students the best we can for a week of HARD work and HOT weather!

Water!
It is so important to remind all students to "PRE-GAME IT", by drinking extra water this week before band camp starts, as well as drinking twice the amount of water a day at band camp to stay HYDRATED.  It is so easy to get behind on hydration and it can cause so many severe consequences.

Over The Counter Medicine:
We want to strongly encourage parents and students to work together on educating our smart students about these medications.  It is a great time in their life to encourage independence with guidance.
Important information to share with students:
  1. Is medication (like Tylenol, ibuprofen, Tums, Benadryl, etc.) really needed? Or can something else be done, like eating something, drinking water and Gatorade, icing down an injury or cleaning a rash area?
  2. What is the medication used for?
  3. How often can the student take the medication?
  4. How much medication should be taken?
  5. If the student takes the medication, how do they tell us as parents or First Aid Volunteers? We all know how dangerous medications can be when taken incorrectly, even over the counter medications. (We use text messaging in my house so there is a "time stamp" for future knowledge.)
  6. If the student seems to need repeat use of a medication, should they be followed up by their Pediatrician?
  7. It is important to NEVER share medications.
As such, we are asking, as parents, that you continue to have conversations with your students about over the counter medications. We are also asking that you equip the students for BAND CAMP, after-school practice, football games, competitions, parades, and other band activities. We are asking parents to provide their students with small amounts of medications that they would permit their student to have.  Remember the education part of the discussion and follow up with your students.  It is amazing how quickly they learn and how smart they are.

General Health Reminders for Band Camp & other Band Activities:
  1. HYDRATION (before, during, and after!!)
  2. Pack small amounts of over the counter medications student may need at band camp, practices, ect.
  3. Powder for chaffed skin (BAND CAMP)--Gold bond yellow bottle works well!
  4. Any Feminine Products required
  5. SUNSCREEN and BUG SPRAY (so hot and buggy!)
  6. Any Home medication that the Student will be taking or need for the week (EPI pens, inhalers, etc.)
The First Aid committee will continue to carry small amounts of medications such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, Tums, and Benadryl.  The First Aid Committee looks forward to continuing to work with all of the students and helping them to do their best and stay safe.  Thank you for all you do to help the students and the band be successful.  Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.
