Day 3 of Band Camp 2017 - Greg Fishel

The day featured the normal routine of winds, guard, and percussion practicing on their respective fields during the morning, followed by additional rehearsals during the afternoon - some inside and some out. The winds also split up into sections to work on things that are unique to them.

I was personally embarrassed during the dinner hour as Doc tied a pink balloon to one of my hands, and I was “forced” to wear a pink tutu! ……In case you don’t know, Doc and I have a golfing rivalry where the winner gets a green ball named Bobby - after Bobby Jones, and the loser gets a pink ball named Victoria - after Victoria Secret. Since I haven’t won in about 3 years, I pretty much own stock in the pink ball, and he publicizes this every chance he gets, much to my chagrin.

After an outside evening rehearsal, it was time for the rookies (first time band campers regardless of class) to begin the bonding process where they truly become a part of the band. I cannot share all the details, as this is a tradition that is owned solely by the Athens Drive Band and its members, but I can assure you that nothing bad happens, and the end result is something that the rookies never forget, and strengthens their relationship with the upperclassmen, hence making the band stronger as a whole. I’ve witnessed this 7 years in succession now, and it truly is something to behold.

Time for Day 4…...!
