Day 2 Band Camp 2017 - Greg Fishel

As we left our respective dorms early Monday morning, many commented on how cool and comfortable the weather was. It was nothing short of gorgeous! All activities were initiated about a half hour early to allow time for a major event Monday evening - more on that later. The winds, percussion, and guard all went to their respective fields for practice.

After lunch, the winds split up into their various sections while percussion and guard continued to rehearse.

Dinner was at 4:15 and then a short rehearsal before all the students headed to a common field to witness a teathered hot air balloon go up with me in it, broadcasting live on WRAL-TV. We were to go on air at 6:10, and while cutting it very close, it appeared we had made it and were ready to go. But alas there was a problem. The sound of the hot air inflating the balloon made it impossible to hear anyone back at WRAL desperately trying to communicate with us. Without that communication, the live shot was aborted. I have to be honest - I was so disappointed for the kids and even a bit angry that things didn't work out. However we did manage to salvage what we call a voiceover for the 10 and 11 newscasts, as well as a Facebook Live which as of this morning had generated almost 13,000 views!!!

More rehearsals, and some parent led games followed and then it was off to band camp dreamland. Day 3 coming up!

(Note from Moderator - the news item was GREAT, Greg! It was so cool to see our musicians on the TV alongside you! Thank you!)
