A Car Wash Story.....

posted Apr 23, 2018, 5:21 AM by Athens Drive High School Band   [ updated Apr 23, 2018, 5:21 AM ]

Once upon a time...

Joe Banddad had a very dirty car.  Between dirt from the kids' shoes, hair from the dog, sand from the beach trip, and pollen from EVERYWHERE, his car was unrecognizable.  So, Joe took his car to one of the two Carolina Auto Spa locations for a $24 Deluxe Wash.
When the wash was done, Joe's car looked great INSIDE and OUT!

But ALAS, this tale does not have an entirely happy ending.  Joe forgot to buy a car wash certificate from the Band Boosters before he went!
If only he'd done that, $8 of that car wash would have gone back to his band account!  Joe won't make that mistake again, and next time Joe and his family (and his car) will live happily ever after  :)

Don't make the same mistake Joe did!  Get your car wash certificates before you go!  Here's how...

...at a band booster meeting- the next one is Tuesday, May 8th at 7:30pm
...at Marching Band orientation May 14th and 15th
...at a concert- upcoming concerts May 10th and 22nd
...at the Spring Band Banquet June 3rd
...anytime!  Just email carwash@athensdriveband.com to make arrangements

Why buy Carolina Auto Spa gift certificates?

...$8 discount is credited to your band account for each one you buy or sell
...sell them to friends and neighbors any time of year for a continuous fundraiser
...kid dirt
...pollen
...beach sand
...get the car clean for prom
...Mother's Day
...Father's Day
...Graduation gifts
...Teacher gifts
...Yikes! the in-laws are coming!
...stock up for summer!
...did I say kid dirt?
...did I say pollen?

Do you need another reason to not make the same mistake as Joe?!  Email us now and arrange to get yours at carwash@athensdriveband.com.  Car wash certificates must be paid for with check or cash (exact amount, please).  They cannot be billed to your account.

See you soon!

Marching Band Reigistration in Now Live!

posted Apr 23, 2018, 5:10 AM by Athens Drive High School Band   [ updated Apr 23, 2018, 5:10 AM ]

The marching band registration form is now live and ready for you to fill out. Please see the below link to register your student for the 2018/19 season. DEADLINE for Marching Band registration is Friday, June 1, 2018.
We have made one addition this year: Each student is required to submit a completed WCPSS Athletic Participation Form which includes a doctor's physical. The Athens Drive Athletic Department will be conducting physicals at the end of May (date and time TBA) for only $10 per student. We will send out an update as soon as we have the information.

Marching Band is a physically demanding activity and we want to ensure the safety of all students by being aware of their medical needs. If your student already has a physical from a 2018 spring sport, you may use this as long as it is good through January of 2019.
There is a link to the Athletic Participation Form in the Marching Band registration form. You must print out the Athletic Form to be completed at your student's physical. Please submit a copy to Doc after you have registered for marching band.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Attention Senior Parents

posted Apr 23, 2018, 5:08 AM by Athens Drive High School Band   [ updated Apr 23, 2018, 5:08 AM ]

Every year the band puts together a slide show of our seniors to be shown at the Spring Band Banquet. Each senior also gets a copy to keep. Last weekend you should have received an e-mail from me regarding submissions for this year's senior slide show; however, I may not have had correct email addresses for everyone and I want to make sure not to leave anyone out. Please respond to ADHSBAND2018@gmail.com with the following information by Friday, April 27th
  1. Picture of your child as a baby or toddler
  2. Picture of your child from elementary or middle school
  3. Picture of your child from high school - Your favorite picture from the band's SmugMug site, your favorite vacation photo, etc.
  4. What is your child's plan for next year (if they already know)?
If there is anything else you'd like to see included, I'm open to suggestions.

Please email digital pictures to ADHSBAND2018@gmail.com. If you don't have digital copies you can scan or provide hard copies for me to scan.
Thank you all so much for your help. I can't wait to share the finished result with you and your kids!

Please take time to review the band statement for April 2018 that you received today (Thursday).

As we are approaching the end of the school year, please note that all charges are due at this time and must be paid prior to  marching band registration. Unfortunately, students with outstanding balances may also be restricted from student privileges such as receiving prom tickets, obtaining a parking pass, or participating in graduation.  If you have an unpaid balance, please take a moment to remit payment now to maintain your student's participation privileges.  If you need to discuss a payment plan please contact the treasurers.

Please note that Fundraiser Service Credits earned beginning April 1st can be applied to the 2018-19 season service requirement if the 2017-18 commitment is already met.  If this applies to you, your shift rate will be credited to your account now; however, the service commitment amount of $35 will not appear on your statement until July 1st.

Summer Guitar Lessons from Doc

posted Apr 12, 2018, 3:15 PM by Athens Drive High School Band   [ updated Apr 12, 2018, 3:16 PM ]

Each summer for the past several years I have been offering a series of guitar lessons with great success!  Geared primarily for beginners and moderately proficient students, these lessons have offered a refreshing way to experience music and enhance one's overall musicianship.  And I'm open to teaching adults as well.
As described in the attached memo, the only thing the student needs to provide is a guitar.  There are many of those floating around, or one can be procured at a local music store, or purchased online inexpensively.

I grew up playing the guitar, having studied the instrument since 4th grade.  Like piano, the guitar is both a melodic and harmonic instrument - and quite rhythmic when one considers all the strumming patterns available.  Without hesitation, I know that my musical ear and overall instinct was shaped primarily by my experience playing this wonderful instrument.

Please contact me if someone in your family is interested - and feel free to pass this along to anyone else that you know!
Thank you so much!
Doc

Summer Guitar Lesson Program (2018)
  1. A total of six 40-minute private lessons will be offered during the weeks of June 18 through August 13.  Lessons will be given on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 8:30am-2:00pm.  Students may choose which weeks they can attend to fit their summer schedule.  I am very flexible with regard to makeups.
  2. No lessons will be given the week of July 2 and July 30.  (This still provides 7 possible weeks for lessons.)
  3. All lessons will be given by Dr. Jerry Markoch, Director of Bands at Athens Drive H.S. who has over 30 years of teaching experience.  Lessons will be given at a former band parent’s residence, located minutes from Athens Drive.  [WCPSS prohibits employees from giving “private” lessons on school property.]
  4. The total cost of the lessons is $225.00—this includes all instructional materials except the guitar.  Students must supply their own guitar; however, guitars can often be borrowed or rented inexpensively at many local dealers.   An acoustic guitar is the best choice for a beginner (it is the most common type of guitar with steel strings).
  5. A $75 deposit (made payable to Dr. Jerry Markoch and sent to the address above) is required to secure a lesson time in the schedule.  It would be preferred that the balance ($150) be paid by the third lesson; however, alternative arrangements can be made.
  6. Although lessons are geared for beginning students in grades 4-12, college age students and adults are welcome.  No prior music experience is necessary.  Lessons can also be given to “intermediate-skilled” students with a year or two of experience.
  7. To get started, please contact Dr. Markoch via email (jmarkoch@wcpss.net) with the preferred day and time of lesson.
Finally…
I have had the opportunity to teach summer guitar lessons to many of our band students for the past 6 years.  It is a terrific, refreshing way to experience music.  Most of our students have learned the skills needed to continue to play the guitar for the rest of their life!  Thank you for your interest in this unique program!
