Reminders for Friday & Saturday

posted Sep 21, 2017, 1:56 PM by Athens Drive High School Band   [ updated Sep 21, 2017, 1:56 PM ]

Just a few reminders:
  1. 1. Please have your student bring $2 in tomorrow for pizza dinner which will take place in the cafeteria at 4:30 tomorrow after practice. They also need to bring black calf-length socks - since this will be their first time performing in their uniforms.
  2. 2. Our first competition is just days away, please make sure your student arrives at school with their show shirt, black calf-length socks, and something to eat after rehearsal - a snack or light lunch. The boosters will be serving sub sandwiches for dinner as soon as we get to George Washington H.S. - approximately 4:30-5:30. So if your student needs something to eat before then, they must bring it themselves.
  3. 3. Also, if your student requires an inhaler or medication they need to carry it with them at all times. At competitions, the busses are usually parked very far away from the stadium and they are not quickly or easily accessible. There are pockets in the uniform jackets that can hold an inhaler very easily. The George Washington H.S. campus is quite large and hilly so they will be walking a lot.
  4. 4. Many students like to change into more comfortable clothes for the bus ride home. If your student would like, they can bring a change of clothes.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Friday Football Game and Saturday Competition Logistics

posted Sep 18, 2017, 7:33 PM by Athens Drive High School Band   [ updated Sep 18, 2017, 7:33 PM ]

This is to provide you with information concerning the Football Game this Friday and the George Washington H.S. Competition in Danville, VA this Saturday.

Friday, Sept. 22, 2017

Because we do not have school on Thursday, we will NOT have our 3-5:30pm after school rehearsal.  Instead, we will have full rehearsal on Friday from 3-4:30pm, followed by a pizza dinner in our cafeteria.  We are asking every student for a $2 donation for the dinner.  Please do not worry if you do not have the funds to pay—we will feed everyone!  We’re just trying to keep our piggy bank full for the Outback Bowl☺
After eating dinner, we will follow the schedule below:

Change into full uniform 5:15pm
Warm-up in Junior lot 5:45pm
March to stadium 6:15pm
Pregame Performance        6:45pm
Game begins 7:00pm
Halftime Performance       @8:00pm
Dismissal (at flagpole near band room) 9:45pm

Students will be wearing their full uniform for this game.  They may wear any type of shirt underneath the jacket; however, they must wear a shirt!  As we will be wearing our blue uniform tee under our uniform tomorrow, I would suggest not wearing the blue tee for this performance (unless you want to wash it Friday evening). Woodwinds and brass will need their flip folders and lyres; all students should bring a small amount of money for drinks/snacks following their performance.

(aka “Dixie Classic”)

Warm up begins 6:45pm
Awards Ceremony 8:30pm
*Transfer back to NC border via the charter bus 9:30-10:30pm
Depart NC border 10:30pm
Arrive Athens Drive Midnight

Important Competition Day Logistics
  1. Students must remain on campus between our rehearsal and inspection; there will not be enough time for students to safely leave campus.
  2. The students will be wearing their uniform shoes, black socks, bibs and blue tee shirt for the bus ride up to Danville.  By wearing the bibs, we do not have to rely on the changing facilities before we perform.  [Changing facilities often operate on strict schedules that can cause warm-ups to be rushed…]  See note #5 below about wearing a lightweight type of shorts under the uniform bibs.
  3. For insurance reasons, we are not permitted to take our activity busses out of North Carolina.  [Big sigh, laughter, shaking my head, look of absolute disbelief, yeah it’s an adventure…]  Instead, we will transport the students across the state line to GWHS via the 1 charter bus we will be taking.  We will park the activity busses at a church near the NC/VA border and platoon the students across by making 2 extra charter bus trips.  It’s only a 10-minute ride to the school from the border.  We’ll do the same thing in reverse following the show.  [Continued big sigh, laughter, etc.]
  4. The boosters will provide a meal for the students when they arrive on the campus of George Washington H.S.
  5. Before we leave the GW campus, students may change into more comfortable clothes for the bus ride home (your choice).  If possible, students are encouraged to wear a lightweight type of shorts under the uniform so they may change out of the uniform outside near our trucks.
  6. Our boosters will provide a light snack for the students’ ride back to Raleigh.
  7. The arrival time (midnight) is our best guess.  We are usually accurate (within the ½ hour); however, due to the multitude of variables that surround events such as this and the number of students involved, adjustments may have to be made.  The safety/well-being of the students is our primary concern.   We’ll get word to you (via REMIND, cell-phone) if we run ahead or behind schedule more than ½ hour.
  8. We enthusiastically invite all parents, family, and friends to travel to Danville to enjoy our performance and route on our band!  YOUR PRESENCE MAKES A DIFFERENCE!  The trip is reasonable with respect to time—about 1.5 hours—and scenic!  The stadium is high allowing the audience to really enjoy the choreography.  [And you will not need to park your car at the NC/VA border to platoon across the state line!!!  LOL!!!   Shaking my head!  Total disbelief!!!  What a joke!!!]
  9. If you are planning to attend the show and would like to drive your child home, please submit a written request.  In general, I like to keep the students together throughout the entire event; however, I will trust your judgment if you feel it absolutely necessary for your child to be home earlier.
  10. You will find the show schedule attached to Yahoo! e-mail
I truly prefer to think of these events as “Band Shows” rather than competitions.  As you can imagine, judging art is very subjective—so subjective that the very act of doing it is highly questionable.  I always encourage our students to do their best everyday
in order for them to perform at their highest potential.  They will always be winners if they do this!  It is vital to remember that we compete against ourselves, not against others.  That said, we do use the feedback that we receive and the adrenaline rush that comes naturally with performance and competition to GROW!

Thank you for all that you have done to make this season so wonderful.  Hope to see you up in Danville routing for our band!

Spirit Wear - Fleeces & Hoodies

posted Sep 17, 2017, 11:11 AM by Athens Drive High School Band   [ updated Sep 17, 2017, 11:12 AM ]

Hello!  Competitions are beginning and we’ll start to see some cool nights!   Many of our band families wear our band fleece on those chilly nights and it’s a great way to spot fellow band members at the competitions.  Before I place an order for the band fleece, I’d like to get a sense of how many we’ll need and what sizes.  They are unisex.   If you are new to band and unfamiliar with the fleece, click this link to check it out.

I am also very low on hoodies (an item the kids typically wear) , but don’t want to order of lot of them if I don’t need them.  If you’d like to order a hoodie for your child, please let me know as soon as possible.  These are also unisex.
If you think you will want one of either item, please email me within the next week at and let me know how which items and  what size.  The turnaround time is usually 2-3 weeks so I’d like to get this order in as soon as possible.

As you know the 9am-9pm practice is this Saturday. As a reminder, please make sure all bibs that needed hemming are back at school on rack in band hallway.

We will be checking the fit for all uniforms for each member to make sure we are ready for the first competition.

We could use a few extra hands! Please contact us if you can help out at any point on Saturday. We will start around 9am and work until we get everyone checked out. Please email us at if you can help out.  Plus, we are still looking for Freshman and sophomore parents to learn the ropes with us and join the team to carry on after we graduate!  Ask us questions and we will tell you all about the fun!

Alison Family

posted Sep 15, 2017, 5:16 AM by Athens Drive High School Band   [ updated Sep 15, 2017, 5:17 AM ]

Thank you to all those who helped our senior percussion student, Robbie Alison, and his father, Chucky!  The response was amazing and heart-warming.  We have the most wonderful band families!

The signup for the family meals filled so quickly, that I had several parents asking what else they could do to help.  So, one of the suggestions was to provide gift cards for Robbie that could be used if he goes out for school lunches (or any other time).  Robbie told me that he likes McDonald's and Chick-fil-A the best, but he isn't too picky.

I've added slots for gift cards to the signup at if anyone would like to contribute.  The dates are during Tuesday and Thursday practices until the end of September.  Each date will take several entries in case more than one person wants to sign up for the same date.  I will collect the gift cards on Tuesdays and Thursdays to give to Robbie before or after band rehearsals.

If you have any questions, please contact me at
Thank you!
