UNC Music Scholarship

04-26-11 Brian Holtshouser has been awarded a Music Scholarship to UNC Chapel Hill. Brian will be attending UNC Chapel Hill in the fall and plans to major in Music Education with a minor in Business. Congratulations to Brian on his outstanding achievement!


Triangle Youth Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet

04-20-13 Corinne Crowley (Bassoon) and Rachel Knierim (French Horn) have earned positions in the Triangle Youth Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet, the most advanced ensemble of the Philharmonic Association. The quintet rehearses regularly throughout the year, and has played concerts at Hayes Barton Baptist Church, local community centers, the Matthew’s House in Cary, and First Night Raleigh New Years Eve celebration. The quintet has also been invited to play in Cary’s sister city Le Touquet, France. They will be traveling to France in early August for a 10-day tour, performing at various venues.


Oberlin Conservatory Dean’s Scholarship

04-14-13 Corinne Crowley received the Conservatory Dean’s Scholarship Award at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio. The Conservatory Dean’s Scholarship is a merit based scholarship awarded based on audition ratings. Corinne plans to obtain her Bachelor of Music degree in Bassoon Performance at Oberlin College. Congratulations to Corinne on this outstanding achievement!


UNC-G Minerva Music Scholarship

04-06-13 Rachel Knierim was one of four students awarded the prestigious Minerva Music Scholarship at UNC Greensboro. Minerva Music Scholars receive a full four year scholarship covering all tuition costs. Scholars are selected on the basis of an established record of excellence. They demonstrate the highest levels of music performance and possess outstanding qualities of leadership, creativity, innovation, dedication and discipline. Rachel plans to attend UNC-G and major in Music Performance. Congratulations to Rachel on her outstanding achievement!


All-State Honors Bands

03-13-12 Matt Baker (Tuba), Corinne Crowley (Bassoon), Rachel Knierim (French Horm) and Joshua Scarborough (Clarinet) were selected by audition to participate in the NC Bandmasters 2013 All-State Honors Bands. To be given an opportunity to compete for All-State selection, a student must first compete for a position in the All-District Honors Band and be selected for a top chair position. All four students earned top positions at All-District auditions and proceeded to All-State. At All-State, Matt earned 1st Chair Tuba in the 9-10 All-State Honor Band, Corinne earned 1st Chair Bassoon in the 11-12 All-State Honor Band, Rachel Knierim earned 1st Chair French Horn in the 11-12 All-State Honor Band and Josh Scarborough earned 8th Chair Clarinet in the 9-10 All-State Honor Band. The NC All-State Honors Bands clinics are scheduled for May 3rd – 5th at UNC Greensboro.


UNC-G Honor Bands

01-28-13 Seven Athens Drive HS Band students auditioned and were invited to attend the 24th Annual Carolina Festival at UNC-Greensboro February 14-16. Brian Holtshouser (Tenor Saxophone), Leah Jamison (Oboe), Evan Johnson (Clarinet), and Grace Wu (Clarinet) earned positions with the UNC-G 11-12 Honors Symphonic Band. Desirae Luke (Baritone Saxophone), Josh Scarborough (Clarinet) and Rebecca Sowell (Clarinet) (not pictured) earned positions with the UNC-G 9-10 Honors Concert Band. Students were selected after submitting an application and recording. Over 300 applications were received from the five-state area. Both concerts will be held at 2:00PM on Saturday, February 16th, at Aycock Auditorium on the UNC-G campus in Greensboro.


All-District Honors Bands

01-10-12 Through audition, 13 Athens Drive HS Band students earned positions with the 2013 All-District Honor Bands. Corinne Crowley (Bassoon), Austin Fishel (Snare) and Rachel Knierim (French Horn) earned a position with the 11-12 Honors Wind Ensemble. Matt Baker (Tuba), Mark Bennett (Trombone), Caitlin Cassidy (French Horn), Amith Mandavilli (Snare), Josh Scarborough (Clarinet) and Matt Wakeford (Trumpet) earned positions with the 9-10 Honors Wind Ensemble. Shuan-Yu Chan (French Horn) (not pictured), Rachael Hiltscher (Clarinet) (not pictured), Leah Jamison (Oboe) and Darby Teander (Alto Saxophone) earned positions with the 9-12 Honors Symphonic Band. Matt Baker (Tuba), Corinne Crowley (Bassoon), Rachel Knierim (French Horn) and Josh Scarborough (Clarinet) also qualified for All-State Honors Band. The All-District Honors Band Concert is scheduled for Saturday, January 26th at Sanderson High School Auditorium in Raleigh.


U.S. Army All-American Marching Band

11-19-12 Brian Holtshouser (Tenor Saxophone) has been awarded a position in the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band which will perform in San Antonio January 5th, 2013. This elite group of 125 of the finest musicians from across the nation will perform at the halftime show of the “U.S. Army All-American Bowl.”


North Carolina Symphony Youth Sinfonietta

11-18-12 Corinne Crowley (Bassoon) and Rachel Knierim (French Horn) have earned positions in the North Carolina Symphony Youth Sinfonietta chamber orchestra. The North Carolina Symphony Youth Sinfonietta is an exclusive chamber group of talented young musicians from across the state, selected by audition. Concerts are Sunday, January 13th, 2013, at 2pm at the Cary Cultural Arts Center in Cary and Sunday, May 19th, 2013 at 2pm at Peace University in Raleigh.


Triangle Youth Brass Bands

11-18-12 Matthew Baker (Tuba), Marc Bennett (Trombone), Rachel Knierim (French Horn), Maddie Ligon (French Horn) and Matt Wakeford (Trumpet) have earned positions with the 2012-2013 Triangle Brass Band’s Youth Bands. Matthew, Rachel and Matt will be performing with the Triangle Youth Brass Band. Marc and Maddie will be performing as part of the Triangle Youth Brass Ensemble.

The Triangle Youth Brass Band’s mission is to provide an opportunity for the area’s finest high school brass and percussion players to supplement their wind band experience by performing in a British-style brass band. Their first concert is Friday, December 14th at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh. 2013 concerts are Saturday, February 16th, Sunday, March 24th and Saturday, May 25th.


North Carolina Honors Orchestra

09-20-12 Rachel Knierim (French Horn) has been selected to participate in the North Carolina Honors Orchestra which will be performing November 11th at the Stevens Center in Winston-Salem. The NC Honors Orchestra is comprised of top players from the previous year’s All State Orchestra.


Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble

09-19-12 Brian Holtshouser (Baritone Sax, Vocals) and Josh Scarborough (Piano) have earned positions in the 2012-2013 Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble. The Triangle Youth Jazz Ensemble is the top jazz group sponsored by the Philharmonic Association. Fall concert dates are October 22nd at Cary Academy and November 4th at Cary Arts Center. On November 11th, they perform for the NCMEA Conference at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem.


Triangle Youth Philharmonic

09-17-12 Matthew Baker (Tuba), Corinne Crowley (Bassoon), Leah Jamison (Oboe) and Rachel Knierim (French Horn) have earned positions in the 2012-2013 Triangle Youth Philharmonic. The Triangle Youth Philharmonic is the most advanced ensemble sponsored by the Philharmonic Association. Concert dates are November 18, December 12, and April 28, 2013. Concerts are held at Meymandi Concert Hall in Raleigh.
